The-Interns

Interns Derek Beckman and Sean Dunn started off Summer 2014 with a new challenge: getting hands-on agency experience at Origo, assisting our team in all functions from planning to execution. Interns are a familiar staple throughout the creative industry, so we’re always excited to shine a light on these individuals who perform an invaluable service to our team and our clients.

Here are a few insights they had to share about their summer at Origo Branding Company:

SEAN DUNN — Motion Graphics/Production Intern

Q: How do you impact the Origo team as an intern?

A: I help with anything from prepping assets, storyboarding, editing, motion graphics, filming and photography. I find it amazing that I’m able to help out on so many various sides of projects!

Q: What surprised you the most about agency life?

A: How many meetings we have; I never knew there was that much that goes into bringing a project to life.

Q: What have you gained from this internship experience?

A: This internship has really been a glimpse into what a real career in the creative industry is like: balancing a forty-hour work week, a social life, and keeping up with my art outside of the office is a juggling act! I think having a stress-free environment to have a test run of that life was really beneficial and has helped me confirm this is exactly what I want to do the rest of my life!

Q: What advice do you have for other students looking for their first internships?

A: The most valuable thing I’ll take from this internship is to always ask questions. I think that asking questions, even sometimes ones that seem so common sense, is great because that way you’re on the same page as everyone else. Also you just learn so much more, they don’t have to be huge philosophical questions, but just asking for work flow tips or short cut keys can help drastically. Also, networking is extremely important, but nothing is more important than just being genuinely nice.

Q: What hidden creative talents do you have outside of your field?

A: My personal talent that most people don’t know is that I’m a percussionist and also love to play the harmonica!

Q: What’s on your iPod currently?

  • Come and Get Your Love – Redbone
  • I Want You Back – Jackson 5
  • Beast – Nico Vega
  • Violent Shiver – Benjamin Booker
  • Swim Until You Can’t See Land – Frightened Rabbit
  • You Make My Dreams Come True – Hall and Oats
  • Countdown – The Black Keys

Q: What’s next for Sean Dunn?

A: For me, it’s to finish my cinematography degree at CCAD, and from there hopefully traveling to somewhere farther away to pursue TV production or possibly keep inside the agency life! As long as I’m creating stuff the rest of my life, I’ll be happy!

DEREK BECKMAN — Marketing Intern

Q: How do you impact the Origo team as an intern?

A: I assist with writing and help manage multiple organizational projects that help the team meet deadlines and create successful strategies.

Q: How has this internship helped in developing your skills for the future?

A: After Origo, I will value my development as a strategic and creative writer, as well as the ability to manage projects efficiently to meet deadlines. I am thankful for the mentorship Reema, Sarah, and Alessandro have given me, helping me to develop these skills.

Q: How do you think your internship at Origo prepares you for the year ahead and your future career?

A: I have new knowledge and experiences that will help me excel in my marketing classes, and Origo has been very influential in helping me choose the right career path.

Q: How would you describe your personal brand?

A: Fun, outgoing, and easy to connect with; I think my personal brand appeals to a wide, diverse audience.

Q: Tell us something interesting about yourself.

A: I am a 3-time winner on the Columbus Municipal Junior Golf Tour. Also, I am the Vice President of the American Marketing Association Tiffin University chapter.

Q: What’s next for Derek Beckman?

A: Next for me is finishing my senior year at Tiffin University, as well as my final season on the men’s golf team. Then, I plan to pursue a career in the marketing industry. I am excited for the future ahead!

We love having Derek and Sean on our team! With such inspiring dedication and drive, we know they will both go far in their respective career paths. Thanks for sharing!

Enjoy the rest of your summer!
